About Deptrum

Founded in 2018, Deptrum focuses on optical sensing, intelligent perception, and high-performance computing. Our capabilities span research, development, and commercialization, from chips and optical hardware to perception algorithms and complete systems. We serve three core markets—robotics, biometrics, and smart devices—with products and solutions reaching customers around the world.

We develop intelligent spatial perception for the physical AI era. Our robotics portfolio supports floor-cleaning, commercial, and underwater robots, and is expanding into robotic arms and embodied AI. Our biometrics business focuses on palm payments and identity verification, with commercial deployments across multiple countries and regions. Our smart-device solutions serve smartphones, VR, and smart homes, and include an under-display 3D structured-light solution.

Deptrum has filed more than 1,000 patent applications worldwide, building a proprietary intellectual property portfolio across optics, chips, algorithms, and applications. The company has been recognized as a National High-Tech Enterprise and a Specialized and Innovative SME in China, and has received numerous awards for technological innovation and industry achievements.

Leadership Team

Li Zhu
Founder & CEO

Li Zhu

Dr. Li Zhu holds a bachelor’s degree in electronic engineering from Tsinghua University and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. His work focuses on nanophotonics research and product development. At Berkeley, he completed his doctorate under Professor Connie Chang-Hasnain, a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and a pioneer in VCSEL technology. During his studies, Dr. Zhu developed an artificial, flexible chameleon skin, which the Optical Society selected for its 2015 Optics of the Year. He has published more than 30 research papers and filed six U.S. patent applications.

Fanglu Lu
Chief Scientist

Fanglu Lu

Dr. Fanglu Lu holds a bachelor’s degree in electronic engineering from Tsinghua University and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. He initiated and led an Intel-sponsored research project, developing a nanolaser with the potential to increase computing speeds more than twentyfold. He also invented a nanoscale optical lens one thousand times smaller than conventional lenses. His work has resulted in nearly 30 journal and conference papers and three best-paper awards at international academic conferences. Before co-founding Deptrum, he was a senior consultant at Exponent, where he developed extensive experience in consumer electronics.

Bo Wang
Chief Technology Officer

Bo Wang

Dr. Bo Wang holds a bachelor’s degree in electronic engineering from Tsinghua University and a Ph.D. from Stanford University. He has extensive experience in autonomous driving and computer systems, with deep expertise in distributed systems and parallel heterogeneous computing. He developed an in-memory data storage system with hardware-based deduplication; the company behind its hardware platform was acquired by Intel in 2014. He previously led the deep learning platform at Zoox, a leading autonomous driving company in Silicon Valley, where he was responsible for training and optimizing machine learning models for autonomous vehicle perception.
